The necessity and nuisance of survival, or how to keep to our senses. Smits, J. Liber Quarterly : the Journal of European Research Libraries, 9(2):140–148, 1999. FE: il. refs.
abstract   bibtex
Discusses issues arising from the transition of maps from analogue to digital formats, which is comparable to that from manuscript to printing in that the early products of the new technology appear cruder than those of older methods. Looks at the historical reasons for map librarians' closer ties with cartographic bodies rather than with librarianship, noting the absence of support, other than from the UK and Scandinavia, for the IFLA '98 digital map librarianship workshop and the fear of map librarians of applying geographical information systems (GIS). Identifies the standard activities of map curators in the analogue age and their probable future activities when map curatorship comes closer to 'geoinformatics'. Libraries will need to create national infrastructures, negotiate with publishers and be aware of the need to back up vulnerable archives.
