Estimating waterbird harvest in Russia. Solokha, A. & Gorokhovsky, K. Suomen Riista, 63:43-52, 2017.
abstract   bibtex
Large diversity and the considerable extent of wetlands in Russia support a great number of waterbirds. Based on Wetlands International and national estimates, more than 3.5 million geese, over 25 million ducks and three million coots might occur in Russia. Numbers of waders, rails and crakes are still very hard to estimate. According to national hunting legislation, nearly 80 species of waterbirds are classified as game species in Russia. They mostly belong to the groups of geese, ducks, waders, rails and crakes. Sport hunting of waterbirds is a widespread and popular activity in Russia, and the (sports) hunting period covers the long autumn season (including late summer and early winter) and, in certain regions, a short spring season for shooting duck drakes and geese. Waterbird bag data collection has been introduced in Russia since the early 2000s, and is still under further development and improvement. Currently this programme consists of three separate surveys including 1) compilation of hunter bag reports; 2) a questionnaire and 3) species identification by photographs. The first survey is an officially endorsed procedure, while the two others methods are currently conducted as research projects.
