A study of the ''Kata Meros Pistis'' by Apollinarius of Laodicea. Spoerl, K. M. Ph.D. Thesis, University of Toronto (Canada), Ann Arbor, 1991.
abstract   bibtex
This dissertation offers a comprehensive study of the only extant treatise on the doctrine of the Trinity that survives by the theologian credited with initiating the Christological controversies, Apollinarius of Laodicea (circa 310-390). The dissertation is divided into three parts. Part 1 presents an historical survey of Apollinarius' life and career, and focuses particularly on those relationships with his contemporaries that were likely to be influential in the formulation of his trinitarian doctrine. Part 1 also discusses the textual history of the K${\}alpha{\}tau{\}grave{\}alpha$ M${\}acute{\}varepsilon{\}rho o{\}varsigma$ ${\}Pi{\}acute{\}iota{\}sigma{\}tau{\}iota{\}varsigma$. Part 2 offers a detailed analysis of the K${\}alpha{\}tau{\}grave{\}alpha$ M${\}acute{\}varepsilon{\}rho o{\}varsigma$ ${\}Pi{\}acute{\}iota{\}sigma{\}tau{\}iota{\}varsigma$ and identifies the chief sources of Apollinarius' trinitarian doctrine in the anti-Arian polemic of Athanasius of Alexandria and the polemic of Eusebius of Caesarea directed against the Neo-Sabellian doctrine of Marcellus of Ancyra. Part 3 summarizes the discoveries made in the course of this analysis and suggests directions for further research on Apollinarius' trinitarian thought. The thesis advances the hypothesis that Apollinarius anticipated and perhaps even influenced the Cappadocians in embracing the one $o{\}upsilon{\}sigma{\}acute{\}iota{\}alpha$/three ${\}upsilon{\}pi o{\}sigma{\}tau{\}acute{\}alpha{\}sigma{\}varepsilon{\}iota{\}varsigma$ formula as an effective foil to the combined errors of Arianism and Neo-Sabellianism. The thesis also attempts to show that the sources of Apollinarius' heterodox Christology are the same as those informing his trinitarian doctrine. A translation of the K${\}alpha{\}tau{\}grave{\}alpha$ M${\}acute{\}varepsilon{\}rho o{\}varsigma$ ${\}Pi{\}acute{\}iota{\}sigma{\}tau{\}iota{\}varsigma$ is provided in an appendix.
