Research and reflexivity [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
This volume explores the implications of reflexivity and self-reference in social science research, including issues of responsibility raised for researchers. Its starting point is that, if researchers are to take seriously that knowledge is a social and cultural construction, they must apply this principle to themselves and their work. They co-produce rather than simply 'discover' the worlds of their research. Thus their own assumptions and activities as researchers must become part of the investigation within a process that explicitly tackles the complexities of multiple realities. The discussion addresses a range of theoretical issues and perspectives about the nature of knowledge and reflexive knowing. The authors reveal how a concern with reflexivity might inform research methodologies and practice. They describe their own research which has, in various ways, attempted to incorporate reflexivity in its design and conduct. Key themes threading through the book are the role of language in constructing scientific and everyday knowledge and the significance of the 'multiple conversations' of reflexive research. Several authors also draw on second-order cybernetics and systems theory, with its attention to circularity and self-reference in social systems. 'Research and Reflexivity' will be essential reading across a wide range of disciplines, from communication studies to education, from organization studies and family therapy to social psychology, as well as for all those concerned with methodology in the social sciences.
