Reuse of Nesting and Nursery Areas by Common Loons. Strong, P., Bissonette, J., & Fair, J. Journal of Wildlife Management, 51(1):123-127, 1987. abstract bibtex We monitored yearly locations of nesting and nursery areas in 45 common loon (Gavia immer) territories on 2 lakes in Maine and 3 in New Hampshire between 1974 and 1984. Reuse of nesting areas on individual lakes over the entire study period was 78-88%. Nest reuse was not strongly related to the outcome of nesting attempts. Year-to-year spatial overlap of nurseries in individual territories was 57-86%. High year-to-year reuse suggests that protection of known nesting and nursery areas is an appropriate strategy for management of reproductive habitats for common loons.
