Alienation and attrition of Black college students on a predominantly White campus. Suen, H. K. Journal of College Student Personnel, 24:117–121, 1983. Place: US Publisher: ACPA Executive Officeabstract bibtex Examined the relationship between alienation and attrition among Black students in a predominantly White university environment. During the 4th wk of the fall semester of 1979, the University Alienation Scale (UAS) was mailed to all the Black students (n = 162) and a random sample of 250 White students. 67 usable questionnaires were returned from Black Ss, and 151 were returned from White Ss. Attrition rate was monitored for 3 consecutive semesters by inspecting the enrollment rosters for each semester. Ss' cumulative GPAs were also gathered at the end of the 2nd semester as an indicator of their academic performance. Results indicate that Blacks felt more alienated within a predominantly White campus than did their White counterparts. The most important contributor to Blacks' total score difference on the UAS was their significantly higher level of social estrangement. Blacks dropped out at a significantly higher rate than did White Ss. GPA related significantly to attrition among both Black and White Ss.
