We can discriminate between the memories of real and imagined events. This study examined traces of perceived external events and imagined internal events. Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were recorded as 13 Japanese speakers (aged 19-30 yrs) viewed Chinese characters and heard spoken words. Results show that the left parahippocampal gyrus represented the traces of visually encoded memory. The right inferior parietal cortex was activated when Ss judged that the original event was imagined. Incorrect judgments were associated with signal increases in the left frontal operculum. Findings suggest that the observed traces are used to distinguish what is seen from what is thought during reality monitoring. The left frontal operculum is a candidate for the monitoring system of contextual information or failure in the retrieval phase. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
