Transgenic herbicide tolerant sugar beet-present status and future developments. Tenning, P. Aspects of Applied Biology, 52:273-278, 1998.
abstract   bibtex
Sugar beet expressing an esps gene of bacterial origin, is tolerant to the herbicide glyphosate (Roundup). During 1993 and 1994 a number of different transformation events, created by Novartis Seeds, were evaluated in the field, for tolerance against the herbicide. Selected transgenic lines were evaluated for yield and other agronomical traits during 1995 and 1996. In 1997 hybrids were entered into official variety registration trials. This paper will discuss the benefits of this trait in sugar beet and the comprehensive safety assessment performed prior to commercial introduction.
