It may be a result of intravascular administration of radiographic and magnetic resonance (MR) contrast media (see also Chap. 22). Despite increased awareness, contrast medium-induced nephropathy remains the third most common cause of hospital-acquired kidney failure, and was responsible for 11% of cases in 2002 and 12% in 1979 (Hou et al. 1983; Nash et al. 2002). The mortality rate in those cases was 14%.
