Long-term losses from accumulation of pesticide residues: a case of persistent copper toxicity in soils of Costa Rica. Thrupp, L. A. Geoforum, 22:1–15, 1991. doi abstract bibtex This article examines a case of soil toxicity from the accumulation of copper-based fungicides (called Bordeaux) in thousands of hectares of land formerly planted in bananas in Costa Rica. Although this problem first emerged in the 1950s in the United Fruit Company's plantations, the damage has persisted, rendering the soils useless for most kinds of agriculture up until the present day. This paper evaluates the economic losses to society and also elucidates the causes of the problem. It is argued that the contributing causes are biochemical factors affecting the reactions of copper in the soil, technical factors including the amount of chemicals and application methods, and, most importantly, socioeconomic factors (such as short-term production goals, unwarranted fears, and lack of information from chemical suppliers) which determine how and why the banana company used these agrochemicals.
