Les origines régionales ancestrales au Québec [link]Website  abstract   bibtex
This study provides a measure of the territorial roots and the diversity of ancestral regional origins in the Quebec population. Data was retrieved from a set of 5,100 ascending genealogies : 300 genealogies for each of the 17 regions of the province. These genealogies were constructed using data from the BALSAC register, which contains information about the population of Quebec from the early 17th century onwards. Observation of ancestors’ places of marriage helped establish a measure of an individual’s regional roots expressed in number of generations. The share of the total numbers of ancestral places of marriage for each region provided a measure of the diversity of individual ancestry. Results showed significant variability in regional roots and ancestral origins. The average depths ranged from less than one generation to over five generations of ancestors married in the same region. Regional contributions highlighted the importance of geographical proximity and age of settlements. These results provide a portrait of the resulting intergenerational interregional migration in Quebec since the 17th century.
