II. Integrating Ecology and Justice: The Papal Encyclical. Tucker, M. E. & Grim, J. The Quarterly Review of Biology, 91(3):261–270, August, 2016. 00000
Paper doi abstract bibtex The media coverage of this document has been unprecedented, including coverage in all of the major newspapers and media outlets in the United States. This is partly due to the popularity of Pope Francis and his authority as a moral voice for the poor and oppressed. But the attention is also due to increasing severity of environmental issues, especially climate change as highlighted by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPCC) reports. With 1.2 billion Catholics on the planet, the potential for attention to the environment and climate change is unprecedented. Even if, as some argue, Encyclicals do not draw the response and obligation from Catholics as in the past, it is clear that this one will be discussed in religious and educational circles radiating out into the larger Christian world and beyond. With a total of over 2 billion Christians, the effect over time could be significant.
