Hemianopia, hemianesthesia, and spatial neglect: A study with evoked potentials. Vallar, G., Sandroni, P., Rusconi, M., & Barbieri, S. Neurology, 41(12):1918–1922, 1991.
doi  abstract   bibtex
Recorded somatosensory (SEPs) or visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to stimuli contralateral to the lesion in 3 right brain-damaged patients (aged 64-76 yrs) with left spatial hemineglect and in 3 left brain-damaged patients (aged 52-66 yrs) with no evidence of neglect, as determined by 2 visual exploratory tasks. Neglect patients may have normal cortical SEPs or VEPs to visual and somatosensory stimuli, without verbal report and conscious perception. The right brain-damaged Ss with preserved evoked hemianesthesia and hemianopia denied their defects. Conversely, the left brain-damaged Ss were aware of their sensory deficits. Damage to the neural structures involved in the conscious processing of sensory input may imply lack of awareness of the resulting deficit.
