Indiana University's AVIDD (Analysis and Visualization of Instrument‐Driven Data) facility is the only geographically distributed cluster on the Top 500 list. It ranks 50th by June of 2003, achieving over 1TFlops of LINPACK performance. In this chapter, AVIDDs hardware and software setup is introduced, and our experience of performance tuning and benchmarking under the guidance of existing LINPACK performance model is reported. In the end, the advantages of this distributed cluster building approach are discussed based on the performance measurements.
