Insects associated with black grama grass, Bouteloua eriopoda. Watts, J. G. Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 56:374–379, 1963.
abstract   bibtex
Collections from black grama grass, Bouteloua eriopoda Torrey, were made throughout the year by a variety of techniques, on a ranch in southern New Mexico, and 9 orders, 55 families, 109 genera, and 120 species of insects were taken. They included grass feeders, parasites and predators, and casual visitors. Four species of Thysanoptera accounted for considerably more than 50% of the total insect population and 97% of the thrips were Chirothrips falsus Hood. Insect populations were translated by use of broad-spectrum insecticides. The reproduction of the C. falsus population by 80% or more resulted from consistent and substantial increase in seed set which in a few cases, increased 6 or 7 times. Other insects were at such low levels that no significant change in their numbers could be measured.
