Dialectal syntax: Plurals and modals in Southern American. Whitley, M. S. Linguistics, 161(Oct 1):89 – 108, October, 1975.
abstract   bibtex
The 1st part of this paper sketches a generative theory of language & dialect, with special emphasis on criterion of congruent representations. In Parts 2 & 3, selected features of Southern American morphosyntax (-all,-an,-em, & the modal system) & their relationship to phrase structures of other American English systems are discussed. It is concluded that Southern & other systems can be classified as dialects of 1 language on the basis of a purely structural criterion. Moreover, the Double Modal construction lends support to reanalysis of modality along the lines which Dillon proposed in 1975. HA
