Proactive inhibition and item similarity in short-term memory. Wickens, D. D., Born, D. G., & Allen, C. K. Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 2(5–6):440–445, 1963. doi abstract bibtex Summary The experiment investigated the effect of proactive inhibition in short-term retention as a function of degree of similarity between the proactive items and the critical test items. When the same class of material, CCC's or NNN's, was used for proactive and test items, marked interference was obtained with as few as three proactive items. No evidence for proactive inhibition was found when the proactive and test items were drawn from different classes of materials, \CCC\ to NNN, or vice versa. There was no evidence that formal similarity (same units in proactive items as in test items) produced greater interference than that obtained from proactive items lacking this formal similarity, but the failure to find any difference may have arisen from the large amount of interference already present.
