Martyrdom in Pierrette: Balzac's Unmasking of Scapegoat Violence [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
A literary criticism of the book "Pierrette," by Honoré de Balzac, is presented. The author argues for a mimetic interpretation of the novel in light of the religiously oriented criticism of René Girard, who was known for his Gospel-oriented scapegoat theory. Topics include social conflict in Balzac's work, his use of scapegoating, as well as themes of persecution.
