Lovejoy's the Great Chain of Being after Fifty Years [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
This essay examines the historiographical and critical literature surrounding lovejoy's "the great chain of being". This literature falls into two categories: that which takes issue with lovejoy's interpretations of particular thinkers, And that which finds fault with his methodology, Especially with his notion of the unit-Idea. It concludes that lovejoy's interpretations are reasonable given his intellectual framework, And that his methodology and the unit-Idea, As recently modified, Are still useful in studying the history of ideas.
