Powdermetallurgical procedures for preparing bulk YBa2Cu3O7-x with statistical or strongly textured grain orientation are described. The influence of the preparation conditions on the microstructure and the physical properties is studied. The characterization of samples with ρvariant(100 K) as low as 147 μωcm and densities > 95% includes the determination of Tc, lattice parameter, X-ray peak profile analysis, oxygen content, elemental distribution, density, microstructure and electrical resistivity. The measurement of the critical current density is essential to the characterization of these materials. For textured samples, inductively measured Jc values for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the textured surface show substantial differences. © 1988.
