The article presents the findings of a study carried out to determine the general aspects of photographs that appeal to readers–as opposed to subject matter categories that might or might not be tied to events. The questions considered in this study were related to readers' likeliness to read stories accompanied by photographs and also, the likeliness to recall facts from stories accompanied by photographs. In the first test, the subjects were asked to indicate their readership of some front-page stories. The test story scored the highest readership with 60% reading it thoroughly and more than 90% reading it at least superficially. When analyzed in groups according to photo treatment, the test issue with the portrait scored the highest readership with 82% reading it thoroughly, and the test issue with the wild art photo had the lowest readership with only 48% reading it thoroughly.
