She and her friends believed simply that she was miscarrying, although she had not known she was pregnant. Her friends carried her to the hospital in the town of Costa Rica, where she was examined by a young doctor and found to be suffering from severe organophosphate insecticide poisoning. Because of the severity of the case, she was taken to the larger hospital in Culiacan, where she died four days later.
