Evaluation on cross compatibility and utilization of wild species of sweetpotato. Xie, Y., Wu, J., Dai, Q., Zhang, L., Yin, Q., & Qiu, R. Journal of Plant Genetic Resources, 4(2):147–150, 2003. abstract bibtex Crosses between sweetpotato and its wild relatives were conducted. Results indicated that the average seed set of I.trifida complex (2X , 4X , 6X) as males crossing with sweetpotato was 9.33%. The cross compatibility of I. trifida (2X , 4X) was less than that of hexaploid I. trifida when crossing with sweetpotato. Tetraploid I. littoralis as male crossed with sweetpotato had a mean seed set of 4.22%. Diploid I. leucantha as male crossed with sweetpotato had a mean seed set of 0.75%. Tuber setting of interspecific hybrid changed with different combinations. The tuber setting and fresh root yield of progenies of interspecific hybrid between hexaploid I. trifida and sweetpotato were higher than that of interspecific hybrid between I. trifida (2X, 4X) and sweetpotato. A wide variation of root yield of the interspecific hybrids appeared from the crosses between sweetpotato and wild species. Some superlines had been selected from the cross combinations of sweetpotato with relative wild species. Two varieties named Suyu 303 and Yusu 297 were released from the combination of B58-5 ×Sushu No.
