Mr. West Mimicking “Mr. West”: America in the Mirror of the Other. Yanoshak, N. Journal of Popular Culture, 41(6):1051--1068, December, 2008. Paper doi abstract bibtex The article discusses the satirical film "The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks," by Lev Kuleshov released in 1924 and its contribution to Soviet film theory and practice. The elements of American film making that are evident in the film that intended to lampoon American stereotypes of Russia are discussed. It is argued that the film offers an opportunity to learn something about how Americans viewed themselves as well as how Russians viewed America. The theory of "mimesis and alterity" posed by anthropologist Michael Taussig is examined. The film production techniques of director Kuleshov are analyzed.
