Endemik Toros Çiçekli Dişbudağı (Fraxinus Ornus Subsp. Cilicica) Ağacı ve Manna [link]Paper  abstract   bibtex
The general characteristics of the flowering ash, Fraxinus ornus ssp. cilicica, which is endemic to the Taurus Mountains in southern Turkey, are described. The tree usually grows to 8-10 m, exceptionally to 20 m. It is widely and sparsely distributed within the mountain forest between 350 and 1500 m altitude, and it is threatened by deforestation and soil erosion. The flowering ash is best known for its production of manna or 'divine food', which is obtained by slitting the trunk bark transversely and allowing the sap that flows to dry. The dried sap is collected and is used medicinally as a mild laxative and expectorant; mannitol is a major constituent. Manna is a minor forest product in Turkey, but it is commercially produced in southern Italy and Sicily.
