Improving mobility for people living with a disability: Automated vehicles’ opportunities and future challenges. Yousfi, E. & Métayer, N.
doi  abstract   bibtex
This article reviews current scientific literature that relates to automated vehicles (i.e. a vehicle controlled by a computer instead of a human driver) and people living with a disability (PLWD). The aim of this review is (1) to question how and why this technological artefact might improve the mobility of individuals living with a disability, and (2) to highlight future challenges to ensure automated vehicles are an opportunity for persons living with a disability’s mobility. It is expected that this review will allow the identification of (1) the gaps in the literature and in the research agenda and (2) the real-world application of the current literature (e.g. design guidelines, regulation needs). Forty-seven publications were reviewed and highlight potential AV benefits for PLWD’s mobility, varying according to the type of vehicle considered (e.g. private versus public transport) as well as potential challenges related to legal framework, accessibility standards and the consideration of PLWD concerns, opinion and needs regarding AVs.
