Life as a Married Couple with Learning Disabilities: Rewards and Challenges Times Two. Yuan, F. Learning Disabilities: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 16(3):133–139, 2010.
Paper abstract bibtex This study examined the outcomes and issues for married couples who are graduates of the Threshold Program at Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Threshold is a non-degree post-secondary program that aims to help young adults with severe learning disabilities and low-average intelligence develop the skills necessary to make the transition to independent living. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered from eleven couples regarding their experiences as married couples, including their living and employment situations, social lives, outside supports, and the rewards and challenges of married life. Findings indicated that many of these graduates shared a special bond and level of trust, and most were very satisfied with their marriages but faced numerous challenges to their overall well-being.
