In a service-oriented environment, where large volumes of geospatial data and diverse geo-processing functions are accessible as services, it is necessary to create service chains as geo-processing workflows to solve complex geospatial problems. Approaches developed in the literature for chaining services can be classified into two categories: static and dynamic. Industry-wide standards such as BPEL provide languages for syntactic specification of service chains. They can not support dynamic service chaining directly, thus can be classified as static approaches. Semantic Web technologies have been widely used to enable dynamic service chaining and are being introduced into geospatial domain. Currently syntactic specification has its advantage in having concrete and industry-wide tools. To take the best from both approaches, this paper provides an approach to automatically transform semantic description from Semantic Web approaches to syntactic specification for geo-processing service chains. Both syntactic specification and semantic description for OGC standards-compliant geospatial Web services and geo-processing chains are provided and illustrated using OWL-S and BPEL. Transformation strategy is presented and a prototype tool transforming OWL-S to BPEL is implemented to demonstrate the applicability of our approach.
