The article discusses the controversy on argument fields tackled by author G. Thomas Goodnight in his essay "The Personal, Technical and Public Spheres of Argument: A Speculative Inquiry Into the Art of Public Deliberation". It is stated that this essay received the National Communication Association's Woolbert Award. Goodnight introduced three spheres, namely personal, technical and public, which he transformed from categories of social behavior to categories relevant to deliberation. The author says that Goodnight's formulation positions argumentation as a core constituent of social life.
