A definition of memory. Zemach, E. M. Mind, 77(308):526–536, 1968.
abstract   bibtex
[first paragraph] The first definition given in this paper ventures to explicate the concept of remembering that p (i.e. remembering that something is the case) by listing the necessary and sufficient conditions for truthfully saying that S remembers that p. On the basis of this definition it will be possible to posit a definition of what is sometimes called "the phenomenological sense of 'remembering'," which I take to be identical with the concept of seeming to remember that p. Finally, I shall try to show that the definition of remembering that p can serve as a basic definition of the concept of memory in general, since all the other forms of the said concept (e.g. remembering the. . ., remembering how to . . . , etc.), can be viewed as merely adding one or more extra conditions to those already included in the original definition.
