Ethereum thus enables global, unincorporated associations to conduct governance experiments. Such experiments are crucial to Decentralised Finance (DeFi). DeFi is a nascent field of unlicensed, unregulated, and non-custodial financial services that utilise public distributed ledgers and crypto-assets rather than corporate structures and sovereign currencies. The inaugural Bloomberg Galaxy DeFi Index, launched in August 2021, included nine Ethereum-based projects – non-custodial exchanges as well as lending and derivatives platforms. Each project is governed, at least in part, by unregistered holders of tokenised voting rights (also known as governance tokens). Token-holders typically vote for or against coders’ improvement proposals that pertain to anything from the allocation of treasury funds to a collateral’s risk parameters. DeFi’s governance thus depends on the distribution and exercise of tokenised voting rights. Since archetypal DeFi projects are not managed by companies or public institutions, not much is known about DeFi’s governance. Regulators and law-makers from the United States recently asked if DeFi’s governance entails a new class of “shadowy” elites. In response, we conducted an exploratory multiple-case study that focused on the tokenised voting rights issued by the nine projects from Bloomberg’s inaugural Galaxy DeFi index. Our mixed methods approach drew on Ethereum-based data about the distribution, trading, staking, and delegation of voting rights tokens, as well as project documentation and archival records. We discovered that DeFi projects’ voting rights are highly concentrated, and the exercise of these rights is very low. Our theoretical contribution is a philosophical intervention: minority rule, not “democracy”, is the probable outcome of token-tradable voting rights and a lack of applicable anti-concentration laws. We interpret DeFi’s minority rule as timocratic.}, language = {en}, urldate = {2023-05-17}, journal = {Technology in Society}, author = {Barbereau, Tom and Smethurst, Reilly and Papageorgiou, Orestis and Sedlmeir, Johannes and Fridgen, Gilbert}, month = may, year = {2023}, keywords = {Blockchain, Ethereum, DeFi, DAO, Platform governance, Voting rights, notion}, pages = {102251}, file = {ScienceDirect Full Text PDF:/Users/tombarbereau/Documents/Zotero/storage/JQFAJGF4/Barbereau et al. - 2023 - Decentralised Finance’s timocratic governance The.pdf:application/pdf;ScienceDirect Snapshot:/Users/tombarbereau/Documents/Zotero/storage/FHCIKYLP/S0160791X23000568.html:text/html}, }

It can be used to measure dopant incorporation, phase segregation, halide mixing, decomposition pathways, passivation mechanisms, short-range and long-range dynamics, and other local properties. This Review describes practical aspects of recording solid-state NMR data on halide perovskites and how these afford unique insights into new compositions, dopants and passivation agents. We discuss the applicability, feasibility and limitations of 1H, 13C, 15N, 14N, 133Cs, 87Rb, 39K, 207Pb, 119Sn, 113Cd, 209Bi, 115In, 19F and 2H NMR in typical experimental scenarios. We highlight the pivotal complementary role of solid-state mechanosynthesis, which enables highly sensitive NMR studies by providing large quantities of high-purity materials of arbitrary complexity and of chemical shifts calculated using density functional theory. We examine the broader impact of solid-state NMR on materials research and how its evolution over seven decades has benefitted structural studies of contemporary materials such as halide perovskites. Finally, we summarize some of the open questions in perovskite optoelectronics that could be addressed using solid-state NMR. We, thereby, hope to stimulate wider use of this technique in materials and optoelectronics research. Solid-state NMR is useful to study the local structure, dynamics and dopant speciation in metal halide perovskites. This is not the first information age, however, to challenge ideas about how and why we value literature and the role numbers might play in this process. The Values in Numbers tells the longer history of this evolving global conversation from the perspective of Japan and maps its potential futures for the study of Japanese literature and world literature more broadly.Hoyt Long offers both a reinterpretation of modern Japanese literature through computational methods and an introduction to the history, theory, and practice of looking at literature through numbers. He weaves explanations of these methods and their application to literature together with critical reflection on the kinds of reasoning such methodologies facilitate. Chapters guide readers through increasingly complex techniques while making novel arguments about topics of fundamental concern, including the role of quantitative thinking in Japanese literary criticism; the canonization of modern literature in print and digital media; the rise of psychological fiction as a genre; the transnational circulation of modernist forms; and discourses of race under empire. Long models how computational methods can be applied outside English-language contexts and to languages written in non-Latin scripts. The case study was part of a larger project and is situated in Shipley in the major LeedsBradford conurbation in Yorkshire, UK where researchers investigated whether open-ended, improvisatory creativity could be used to catalyse and revitalise a sense of connectivity between local residents and their landscape. The research process was based on a qualitative interpretative strategy and was subjective, interdisciplinary and emergent. The creative methods used included performance and story-telling. The guiding research question was: might local residents become more inclined towards proactive engagement and collaboration (within the community and with outside agencies) if their latent desire for landscape change could be focused through the stimulus of creative intervention? Two key conclusions were reached: 1. Local landscape affordances can provide both the catalyst and the ‘stage’ for collaborative creativity, which can in turn be an important ingredient of landscape planning; 2. Engaging a community in co-created activities, which focus attention on and through the landscape, can lead to desired change in the local landscape and a strengthening of the community’s collective identity. The idea of the Caribbean woman as 'miracle worker' is suggested in the ability to "make something from nothing," but it also calls up the biblical Creation story, whereby the world was created from nothing.3 In this regard, there is not only a creative impulse associated with 'making do,' as expressed in the description of "cutting, carving and contriving," but also a transformative imagination to see value where others saw nothingness or worthlessness. In Black Sand, Baugh ironically begins with "End Poem," in which, as I have argued before,4 he "signals the importance of using poetry to shine light on the left-behind-life's detritus, 'the rubbish heap of history,' if you may, on which Caribbean creative endeavour thrives-making 'rubble' and 'weed' 'central tropes of creative expression'" (Bucknor). The diction here in the phrase "strike music" connotatively implies 'striking gold,' more in line with Walcott's idea of the "Adamic elation" of a creative breakthrough, as opposed to a Christopher Columbus colonial mode of discovery ("Muse" 36-37): [A]nd when that daring song tower falls, may goats and children know delight poking round each rubble height and sunlight strike bright music from shards of weed-grown walls.}, language = {English}, number = {1}, urldate = {2021-09-04}, journal = {Journal of West Indian Literature}, author = {Bucknor, Michael A.}, year = {2020}, keywords = {Children, Creativity, Ecocriticism, Imperialism, Literature, Metaphysics, Music, Poetics, Poetry, Postcolonialism, Rhetorical figures, notion, ⛔ No DOI found}, pages = {33--45,97--98}, }

Accurate irony detection is crucial for tasks such as effective sentiment analysis. A text’s ironic intent is defined by its context incongruity. For example in the phrase “I love being ignored”, the irony is defined by the incongruity between the positive word “love” and the negative context of “being ignored”. Existing studies mostly formulate irony detection as a standard supervised learning text categorization task, relying on explicit expressions for detecting context incongruity. In this paper we formulate irony detection instead as a transfer learning task where supervised learning on irony labeled text is enriched with knowledge transferred from external sentiment analysis resources. Importantly, we focus on identifying the hidden, implicit incongruity without relying on explicit incongruity expressions, as in “I like to think of myself as a broken down Justin Bieber – my philosophy professor.” We propose three transfer learning-based approaches to using sentiment knowledge to improve the attention mechanism of recurrent neural models for capturing hidden patterns for incongruity. Our main findings are: (1) Using sentiment knowledge from external resources is a very effective approach to improving irony detection; (2) For detecting implicit incongruity, transferring deep sentiment features seems to be the most effective way. Modern architecture and the X-ray were born around the same time and evolved in parallel. While the X-ray exposed the inside of the body to the public eye, the modern building unveiled its interior, dramatically inverting the relationship between private and public. I approach this dilemma through the literature of the twenty-first-century U.S. and Global South, including an oral history of oil workers, a vampire novel, experimental poetry, outdoor theater, and documentary and fictional film. The project traces the ways infrastructure promises the necessities for survival and inclusion in modernity at the same time as it acts as a tool of social control and differentiation. The speakers in my archive imagine ways of inhabiting vulnerable environments that refuse the legacies of slavery and colonialism. The dissertation also traces an emergent awareness in my archive of economic and environmental vulnerability as well as the limitations of conventional historical and literary narrative to account for violent pasts. Alongside the pressures of constraint is these archives' stubborn, improvisatory, and celebratory insistence that there are alternative modes of being to those presented by liberal discourses of progress and enfranchisement. Dominant ways of knowing do not just overlook these alternatives; they are, as my project demonstrates, structurally incapable of seeing them. But just as these intertwined social and ecological lives provide the matrix for capital accumulation, their persistence shows us that in spite of their obscurity, other ways of being continue to exist. My goal here is both to theorize the limitations to representing environmental violence, and to explore how other aesthetics and reading practices offer ways of attending to social-ecological lives that persist beyond exploitation. En efecto, la poeta asegura que ella escribe "radicalmente en femenino". La gramática de género supone en este sentido un sitio privilegiado de emisión del discurso poético. Sin embargo, el diálogo afectivo con la naturaleza, un elemento crucial en la poética valdesina de la extrañeza, desestabiliza la integridad sexual en la subjetividad poética. Este argumento se asienta en una metodología que yuxtapone el poder transformador de la energía emocional/afectiva acumulada en el poema, con la elaboración formal de una ecología queer que manifiesta la continuidad existencial entre la subjetividad poética y lo/la/el otro/a. En la poesía de García Valdés, la representación del dinamismo afectivo del cuerpo en el lenguaje excede la constitución gramatical de sus propios límites, un exceso que termina por cuestionar la coherencia discursiva de la experiencia sexual en el poema. Alternate abstract: The poetry of Olvido García Valdés has been studied in opposition to patriarchal discourse. Indeed, the poet says that she writes "radically in feminine". The grammar of gender supposes, in this sense, a privileged locus of emission of the poetic speech. However, the affective dialogue with nature, a crucial element in the Valdesian poetics of strangeness, destabilizes sexual integrity in the poetic subjectivity. This argument is grounded in a methodology that juxtaposes the transformational power of emotional/affective energy accumulated in the poem, with the spatial form of a queer ecology that manifests the existential continuity between the self and a gender neutral other. In the poetry of García Valdés, the representation of the affective dynamism of the body in language exceeds the grammatical constitution of its own limits, a textual excess that results in questioning the discursive coherence of the sexual experience in the poem.}, language = {Spanish}, number = {24}, urldate = {2021-09-04}, journal = {Lectora}, author = {Álvarez, Enrique}, year = {2018}, keywords = {Coherence, Ecocriticism, Ecocrítica, Gender identity, Identidad de género, Literatura española, Philosophy, Poesía femenina, Poetics, Poetry, Poética, Queer theory, Spanish literature, Subjectivity, Teoría queer, Women's Interests, Women's poetry, notion}, pages = {239--260}, }

This essay combines Latinx literary critical methodologies, including formal analysis of the novel's spatial representations, with ecocritical considerations of toxicity in order to unpack how Under the Feet of Jesus posits a form of environmental literacy that critiques dominant paradigms of critical resistance including conventional environmental discourse. These representations emphasize how environmental injustice functions as an integral aspect of the racialization of farmworkers. Rather than presenting environmental racism as aberrant, or detailing individual instances of environmental harm outside a larger context, the novel suggests that toxicity and environmental degradation are structural aspects of farmworker life. Application of link prediction to social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, is useful both for developing novel services and for sociological analyses. While most existing research on link prediction uses only the social network topology for the prediction, in social media, records of user activities such as posting, replying, and reposting are available. These records are expected to reflect user interest, and so incorporating them should improve link prediction. However, research into link prediction using the records of user activities is still in its infancy, and the effectiveness of such records for link prediction has not been fully explored. In this study, we focus in particular on records of reposting as a promising source that could be useful for link prediction, and investigate their effectiveness for link prediction on the popular social media platform Twitter. Our results show that (1) the prediction accuracy of techniques using reposting records is higher than that of popular topology-based techniques such as common neighbors and resource allocation for actively retweeting users, (2) the accuracy of link prediction techniques that use network topology alone can be improved by incorporating reposting records.}, language = {en}, number = {1}, urldate = {2021-08-17}, journal = {PLOS ONE}, author = {Tsugawa, Sho and Kito, Kosuke}, month = jan, year = {2017}, note = {Publisher: Public Library of Science}, keywords = {Evolutionary modeling, Facebook, Network analysis, Social media, Social networks, Social research, Sociology, Twitter, notion}, pages = {e0170279}, }

Drawing on the insights of material ecocriticism, biopolitics, and cultural geography, this study theorizes that trash and related concepts (waste, disposal, etc.) play an integral part in contemporary reflections on what it means to be human, how urban space is produced, and what constitutes culture itself. As an important part of social reality across Latin America, trash occupies the attention of writers and filmmakers who are attuned to the discursive power it takes on as it flows through different spaces, colliding with and repelling bodies, inhabiting the ambiguous borderland between rigid conceptualizations of nature and culture.{\textasciicircum} Texts that are attentive to the stories that trash has to tell highlight the material ties that bind together issues that have long been important sites of critical reflection in Latin American literature: the uses and abuses of the environment, marginalization of the Other, and violence. By telling stories that show how these issues are simultaneously discursive and material, the texts and films studied here constitute a series of complex aesthetic interventions that pose urgent questions regarding the nature of culture in contemporary Latin America and the aesthetic and ethical implications of the increasingly notable presence of trash in the region's cultural production.{\textasciicircum} In its treatment of novels and documentary films that have dumps and landfills as major settings; short stories, documentary films, and cronicas whose main characters are garbage pickers; and novels that portray writing as a process of digging through the trash and piecing together a story from the material found therein, this dissertation shows that the trash in contemporary Latin American literature is a material and discursive presence that calls for serious reflection on the question of what it means to live during the Anthropocene when waste has deeply and irrevocably altered the terms of that habitation.}, language = {English}, urldate = {2021-09-16}, publisher = {ProQuest Dissertations \& Theses}, author = {McKay, Micah D and {University of Wisconsin--Madison} and {Spanish}}, year = {2017}, note = {OCLC: 1237218641}, keywords = {notion}, }

What are the most popular and powerful channels for media distribution on a global scale? How are film industries changing in the face of media convergence and digitisation? To answer questions such as these, argues Ramon Lobato, we must shift our gaze away from the legal film business and toward cinema's shadow economies. All around the world, films are bought from roadside stalls, local markets, and grocery stores; they are illegally downloaded and streamed; they are watched in makeshift video clubs, on street corners, and in restaurants, shops and bars. International film culture in its actually-existing forms is a messy affair, and it relies to a great extent on black and grey media markets. Examining the industrial dynamics of these subterranean film networks across a number of different sites – from Los Angeles to Lagos, Melbourne to Mexico City – this book shows how they constitute a central rather than marginal part of audiovisual culture and commerce. Combining film industry analysis with cultural theory, Shadow Economies of Cinema opens up a new area of inquiry for cinema studies, putting industry research into dialogue with wider debates about economic informality and commodity circulation. They have become important and fashionable once more. Rethinking Maps brings together leading researchers to explore how maps are being rethought, made and used, and what these changes mean for working cartographers, applied mapping research, and cartographic scholarship. It offers a contemporary assessment of the diverse forms that mapping now takes and, drawing upon a number of theoretic perspectives and disciplines, provides an insightful commentary on new ontological and epistemological thinking with respect to cartography. This book presents a diverse set of approaches to a wide range of map forms and activities in what is presently a rapidly changing field. It employs a multi-disciplinary approach to important contemporary mapping practices, with chapters written by leading theorists who have an international reputation for innovative thinking. Much of the new research around mapping is emerging as critical dialogue between practice and theory and this book has chapters focused on intersections with play, race and cinema. Other chapters discuss cartographic representation, sustainable mapping and visual geographies. It also considers how alternative models of map creation and use such as open-source mappings and map mash-up are being creatively explored by programmers, artists and activists. There is also an examination of the work of various ‘everyday mappers’ in diverse social and cultural contexts. This blend of conceptual chapters and theoretically directed case studies provides an excellent resource suited to a broad spectrum of researchers, advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in human geography, GIScience and cartography, visual anthropology, media studies, graphic design and computer graphics. Many such systems are characterized by limited mineral sedimentation and/or rapid subsidence and are consequently dependent upon accumulation of organic matter to maintain elevations. However, little field information exists regarding the contribution of specific biological processes to vertical accretion and elevation change. This study used biogenic mangrove systems in carbonate settings in Belize (BZ) and southwest Florida (FL) to examine biophysical controls on elevation change. Rates of elevation change, vertical accretion, benthic mat formation, and belowground root accumulation were measured in fringe, basin, scrub, and dwarf forest types plus a restored forest. Elevation change rates (mm yr−1) measured with Surface Elevation Tables varied widely: BZ-Dwarf (−3.7), BZ-Scrub (−1.1), FL-Fringe (0.6), FL-Basin (2.1), BZ-Fringe (4.1), and FL-Restored (9.9). Root mass accumulation varied across sites (82–739 g m−2 yr−1) and was positively correlated with elevation change. Root volumetric contribution to vertical change (mm yr−1) was lowest in BZ-Dwarf (1.2) and FL-Fringe (2.4), intermediate in FL-Basin (4.1) and BZ-Scrub (4.3), and highest in BZ-Fringe (8.8) and FL-Restored (11.8) sites. Surface growth of turf-forming algae, microbial mats, or accumulation of leaf litter and detritus also made significant contributions to vertical accretion. Turf algal mats in fringe and scrub forests accreted faster (2.7 mm yr−1) than leaf litter mats in basin forests (1.9 mm yr−1), but similarly to microbial mats in dwarf forests (2.1 mm yr−1). Surface accretion of mineral material accounted for only 0.2–3.3\% of total vertical change. Those sites with high root contributions and/or rapid growth of living mats exhibited an elevation surplus (+2 to +8 mm yr−1), whereas those with low root inputs and low (or non-living) mat accumulation showed an elevation deficit (−1 to −5.7 mm yr−1). This study indicates that biotic processes of root production and benthic mat formation are important controls on accretion and elevation change in mangrove ecosystems common to the Caribbean Region. Quantification of specific biological controls on elevation provides better insight into how sustainability of such systems might be influenced by global (e.g., climate, atmospheric CO2) and local (e.g., nutrients, disturbance) factors affecting organic matter accumulation, in addition to relative sea-level rise.}, number = {4}, urldate = {2021-11-01}, journal = {Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science}, author = {McKee, Karen L.}, year = {2011}, note = {Code: Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science Type: Journal Article}, keywords = {notion}, pages = {475483}, }

Using a national sample of US adults, this study investigated the relationship between these three dimensions of the Big-Five model and social media use (defined as use of social networking sites and instant messages). It also examined whether gender and age played a role in that dynamic. Results revealed that while extraversion and openness to experiences were positively related to social media use, emotional stability was a negative predictor, controlling for socio-demographics and life satisfaction. These findings differed by gender and age. While extraverted men and women were both likely to be more frequent users of social media tools, only the men with greater degrees of emotional instability were more regular users. The relationship between extraversion and social media use was particularly important among the young adult cohort. In this richly illustrated study, Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin offer a theory of mediation for our digital age that challenges this assumption. They argue that new visual media achieve their cultural significance precisely by paying homage to, rivaling, and refashioning such earlier media as perspective painting, photography, film, and television. They call this process of refashioning "remediation," and they note that earlier media have also refashioned one another: photography remediated painting, film remediated stage production and photography, and television remediated film, vaudeville, and radio.}, language = {en}, publisher = {MIT Press}, author = {Bolter, Jay David and Grusin, Richard}, month = jan, year = {2000}, note = {Google-Books-ID: kwZZdKiXG8wC}, keywords = {Social Science / Methodology, notion}, }

In this paper, the various methods that have been proposed for obtaining pure absorption-mode lineshapes in MQMAS experiments are described and compared. The methods can be classified according to whether the data are amplitude- or phase-modulated as a function of the evolution period, t1. Both classes of experiment are usually performed in such a way that the inhomogeneous quadrupolar broadening is spread out along a ridge which, for spins I = 3/2 and 5/2, respectively, has a slope of -7/9 or 19/12 with respect to the F2 axis. This paper shows, however, that there are disadvantages associated with recording the data in this fashion and demonstrates, in particular, that a shearing transformation of the final two-dimensional spectrum can lead to distorted line-shapes. Novel amplitude- and phase-modulated "split-t1" MQMAS experiments are introduced which fully refocus the second-order broadening during the evolution period, t1, thereby avoiding the need for a shearing transformation. The considerable practical advantages of these split-t1 experiments are discussed, particularly with regard to ease of implementation and processing. In general, the sensitivities achievable using the split-t1 MQMAS experiments are predicted to be similar to those obtainable with other methods and, in the special case of the spin I = 3/2 phase-modulated experiments, are even shown to be slightly superior. © 1997 Academic Press.}, number = {1}, urldate = {2021-05-28}, journal = {Journal of Magnetic Resonance}, author = {Brown, Steven P. and Wimperis, Stephen}, month = sep, year = {1997}, note = {Publisher: Academic Press Inc.}, keywords = {notion}, pages = {42--61}, }

A density-matrix model applicable to cases where the quadrupole frequency νQ is much larger than the rf amplitude ν1S of the S spins, predicts the time development of the spin state of an isolated I, S spin pair in static situations and in three distinct cases of magic-angle-spinning speed νR. These cases are characterized as slow, intermediate, and fast, depending on the magnitude of the parameter α = ν1S2 νQνR relative to the intermediate value of 0.4. The model predictions are supported by numerical simulations. The polarization transfer from I to S is efficient in the limits of slow and fast sample spinning. When α ≪ 1, the Hartmann-Hahn condition is shifted over once or twice νR. When the spinning rate is intermediate, poor spin-locking of the quadrupolar spins prevents the accumulation of a cross-polarization signal and, in addition, depletes the spin-locked I magnetization. Experimental CP MAS data obtained in NaOH show that the concepts developed for isolated spin pairs are also applicable to cross-polarization in a strongly coupled multi-spin system. © 1992.}, number = {1}, urldate = {2020-03-30}, journal = {Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance}, author = {Vega, Alexander J.}, month = feb, year = {1992}, note = {Publisher: Academic Press}, keywords = {NMR spectroscopy, cross-polarization, notion, quadrupolar nuclei}, pages = {17--32}, }
