This paper presents the construction of an autonomous robot to participating in the autonomous driving competition of the National Festival of Robotics in Portugal, which relies on an open platform requiring basic knowledge of robotics, like mechanics, control, computer vision and energy management. The projet is an excellent way for teaching robotics concepts to engineering students, once the platform endows students with an intuitive learning for current technologies, development and testing of new algorithms in the area of mobile robotics and also in generating good team-building.

When it comes to localising the robot, there is a need for a preliminary map, which is obtained from a first robot visit to the farm. Mapping is a semi-autonomous task that requires a human operator to drive the robot throughout the environment using a control pad. Visual and geometric features are used by Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) Algorithms to model and recognise places, and track the robot’s motion. In agricultural fields, this represents a time-consuming operation. This work proposes a novel solution—called AgRoBPP-bridge—to autonomously extract Occupancy Grid and Topological maps from satellites images. These preliminary maps are used by the robot in its first visit, reducing the need of human intervention and making the path planning algorithms more efficient. AgRoBPP-bridge consists of two stages: vineyards row detection and topological map extraction. For vineyards row detection, we explored two approaches, one that is based on conventional machine learning technique, by considering Support Vector Machine with Local Binary Pattern-based features, and another one found in deep learning techniques (ResNET and DenseNET). From the vineyards row detection, we extracted an occupation grid map and, by considering advanced image processing techniques and Voronoi diagrams concept, we obtained a topological map. Our results demonstrated an overall accuracy higher than 85% for detecting vineyards and free paths for robot navigation. The Support Vector Machine (SVM)-based approach demonstrated the best performance in terms of precision and computational resources consumption. AgRoBPP-bridge shows to be a relevant contribution to simplify the deployment of robots in agriculture.},

One of the well-known competition is the micromouse where the fastest mobile robot to solve a maze is the winner. There are several topics addressed in this competition such as robot prototyping, control, electronics, path planning, optimization, among others. A simulation can be used to speed-up the development and testing algorithms but faces the gap between the reality in the dynamics behaviour. In this paper, an open source realistic simulator tool is presented where the dynamics of the robot, the slippage of the wheels, the friction and the 3D visualization can be found. The complete simulator with the robot model and an example is available that allow the users to test, implement and change all the environment. The presented results validate the proposed simulator.

For the implementation of the techniques, computational tools of tests were developed, and for the purposes of validation and comparison of the results were used, with the appropriate adaptations, and described in the work, being these among the most recognised in terms of evaluation of signal quality. Finally, we present the results and the conclusions, where we sought a compromise of the implementations between the estimated percentage of DCT and the level of degradation of the signal provided by the compression application. In this sense, it was verified that they presented satisfactory results.},

This paper presents an innovative and motivating methodology to learn vision systems using a humanoid robot, NAO robot. Vision systems are an area of growing development and interest of engineering students. This approach to learning was applied in students of Master of Electrical Engineering. The goal is to introduce students the main approaches of visual object recognition and human face recognition using computer vision techniques to be embedded in a social robot and therefore he is able to iteract with human beings. NAO robot as an educational platform easy to learn how to program, and it has a high sensory ability and two cameras that can capture the images for processing.

A simulation can be used to speed-up the development and testing algorithms but faces the gap between a simulation and reality, specially in the dynamics behaviour. There are some simulation environments that allow to simulate the Micromouse competition, but in this paper, an Hardware-in-the-loop simulator tool is presented where the simulated robot is controlled by the same microcontroller used by the robot. By this way, the developed algorithms are tested and validated with the limitations and constraints presented in the real hardware, such as memory and processing capabilities. The robot dynamics, the slippage of the wheels, the friction and the 3D visualization are present in the simulator. The presented results show that the same code and hardware controlling the simulated and the real robot identically.},

Robotics competitions are a way to challenge researchers, roboticists and enthusiastic to address robot applications. One of the well-known international competition is the Micromouse where the fastest mobile robot to solve a maze is the winner. There are several topics addressed in this competition such as robot prototyping, control, electronics, path planning, optimization, among others while keeping the size of the robot as small as possible. A simulation can be used to speed-up the development and testing algorithms but faces the gap between a simulation and reality, specially in the dynamics behaviour. There are some simulation environments that allow to simulate the Micromouse competition, but in this paper, an Hardware-in-the-loop simulator tool is presented where the simulated robot is controlled by the same microcontroller used by the robot. By this way, the developed algorithms are tested and validated with the limitations and constraints presented in the real hardware, such as memory and processing capabilities. The robot dynamics, the slippage of the wheels, the friction and the 3D visualization are present in the simulator. The presented results show that the same code and hardware controlling the simulated and the real robot identically.

This article is devoted to the problem of training cyclists from a system approach. Technologies were used to monitor and evaluate in an integrated way the physical form, load parameters and level of functional capabilities of the athlete's body. For correlation between the physiological indices and performance, data from cardiac activity (ECG), muscle activity (EMG and temperature), respiratory processes (oximetry), as well as data from the environment where this athlete is inserted (ambient temperature, pressure, humidity).

As Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) operates in the free 2.4GHz ISM band, the same band that Wi-Fi signals operate, tests regarding interference, robustness and coexistence must be made in order to ensure Quality of Service (QoS) and therefore achieve medical diagnostic equipment status. This paper presents a BLE prototype and compares the results obtained in terms of radiated power over distance with and without physical barriers. © 2013 The Science and Information Organization.

The academic performance and social competence of a child in school is positively associated with the involvement of their parents. However, the researches about educational learning models often ignore the parents' part. Internet opens a new paradigm: education and communication approach is more complex than ever. Here, we would like to present an Internet based system to support students' homework. We believe that one of the major advantages of our system is time saving, particularly from the teacher's point of view. A fabricated micro-mechanical sensor to assess the condition of automotive shock absorbers is presented. The monolithic sensor, measures the oil temperature, acceleration and internal pressure of the shock absorber. A dual mass accelerometer with optimized beam geometry is used for acceleration readout. This paper reports the design, modelling, fabrication and assembly of a silicon bulk-micromachined soil moisture microsensor using the Dual-Probe Heat-Pulse (DPHP) method. Soil humidity measurement is essential to study soil preservation and control the development of plants, namely in closed ecosystem. The DPHP method uses a heater (Peltier effect) and a temperature probe (Seebeck effect) to determine the volumetric heat capacity of the soil and hence water content (theta (v)).
