@article{singh_impact_2021, abstract = {Abstract As machine learning research in the field of cardiovascular imaging continues to grow, obtaining reliable model performance estimates is critical to develop reliable baselines and compare different algorithms. While the machine learning community has generally accepted methods such as k-fold stratified cross-validation (CV) to be more rigorous than single split validation, the standard research practice in medical fields is the use of single split validation techniques. This is especially concerning given the relatively small sample sizes of datasets used for cardiovascular imaging. We aim to examine how train-test split variation impacts the stability of machine learning (ML) model performance estimates in several validation techniques on two real-world cardiovascular imaging datasets: stratified split-sample validation (70/30 and 50/50 train-test splits), tenfold stratified CV, 10 × repeated tenfold stratified CV, bootstrapping (500 × repeated), and leave one out (LOO) validation. We demonstrate that split validation methods lead to the highest range in AUC and statistically significant differences in ROC curves, unlike the other aforementioned approaches. When building predictive models on relatively small data sets as is often the case in medical imaging, split-sample validation techniques can produce instability in performance estimates with variations in range over 0.15 in the AUC values, and thus any of the alternate validation methods are recommended.}, added-at = {2023-08-28T10:32:21.000+0200}, author = {Singh, Vikash and Pencina, Michael and Einstein, Andrew J. and Liang, Joanna X. and Berman, Daniel S. and Slomka, Piotr}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/21fb62fdca2245019898fd4f6edc2c094/serafsoft}, doi = {10.1038/s41598-021-93651-5}, file = {Singh et al. - 2021 - Impact of traintest sample regimen on performance.pdf:files/28/Singh et al. - 2021 - Impact of traintest sample regimen on performance.pdf:application/pdf}, interhash = {d2ba14b109d3039ecbd77e80dd460ad6}, intrahash = {1fb62fdca2245019898fd4f6edc2c094}, issn = {2045-2322}, journal = {Sci Rep}, keywords = {imported}, language = {en}, month = {07}, number = 1, pages = 14490, timestamp = {2023-08-28T10:32:33.000+0200}, title = {Impact of train/test sample regimen on performance estimate stability of machine learning in cardiovascular imaging}, url = {https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-93651-5}, urldate = {2023-06-13}, volume = 11, year = 2021 }

@inproceedings{LS2017, abstract = {Recently published approaches to SLAM algorithms process laser sensor measurements and output a map as a point cloud of the environment. Often the actual precision of the map remains unclear, since SLAMalgorithms apply local improvements to the resulting map. Unfortunately, it is not trivial to compare the performance of SLAMalgorithms objectively, especially without an accurate ground truth. This paper presents a novel benchmarking technique that allows to compare a precise map generated with an accurate ground truth trajectory to a map with a manipulated trajectory which was distorted by different forms of noise. The accurate ground truth is acquired by mounting a laser scanner on an industrial robotic arm. The robotic arm is moved on a predefined path while the position and orientation of the end-effector tool are monitored. During this process the 2D profile measurements of the laser scanner are recorded in six degrees of freedom and afterwards used to generate a precise point cloud of the test environment. For benchmarking, an offline continuous-time SLAM algorithm is subsequently applied to remove the inserted distortions. Finally, it is shown that the manipulated point cloud is reversible to its previous state and is slightly improved compared to the original version, since small errors that came into account by imprecise assumptions, sensor noise and calibration errors are removed as well.}, added-at = {2017-11-08T15:05:44.000+0100}, address = {Wuhan, China}, author = {Koch, B. and Leblebici, R. and Martell, A. and J{\"o}rissen, S. and Schilling, K. and N{\"u}chter, A.}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/21ef33e57269c2972850d61942dc28f3e/nuechter76}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the ISPRS Geospatial Week 2017, Laserscanning 2017}, doi = {10.5194/isprs-annals-IV-2-W4-91-2017}, interhash = {127fd98610ca2eb215fc027b106f0b22}, intrahash = {1ef33e57269c2972850d61942dc28f3e}, keywords = {imported}, month = {September}, pages = {17--23}, series = {ISPRS Annals Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Spatial Inf. @article{2456, abstract = {Background Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) continues to be diagnosed at a greater rate in males than in females with current prevalence rates estimated at 4-5:1 (males; CDC, 2016). Although clinical characteristics of ASD manifest differently in males and females (e.g. B{\"o}lte et al, 2011; Carter et al, 2007), few studies have investigated sex differences in ASD{\textquoteright}s two core domains: social{\textendash}communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors, interests and activities (RRBs). Additionally, compared to the social-communication domain, considerably less is known about the cause, development and impact of RRBs in children with ASD, including possible sex differences. Objectives The aim of this study is to examine potential differences in clinically identified (ADOS) RRB symptoms using a large sample of age and IQ-matched females and males with ASD. Methods Data were extracted from the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network (ATN) registry. The study sample included 513 females and 513 males with an ASD diagnosis (Autistic Disorder, Asperger{\textquoteright}s Disorder) propensity score-matched 1:1 on age in 24mo intervals and IQ (>=70 vs. <70). Age (<6 yrs, 6-<12 yrs), race, ethnicity, IQ, caregiver education, evidence of lost skills, and autism diagnosis were tabulated overall and by sex. Fisher{\textquoteright}s exact tests evaluated if these characteristics differ by sex. ADOS RRB domain calibrated severity score and its individual items were described overall and by sex in four age-IQ groups: 1. IQ>=70 and < 6 yrs, 2. IQ>=70 and 6-<12 yrs, 3. IQ<70 and <6 yrs, 4. IQ<70 and 6-<12 yrs. T-tests assessed whether RRB differs by sex within each of these groups. Means and standard deviations were reported. RRB individual item scores (1 or 2 vs. 0) were tabulated by sex, and Fisher{\textquoteright}s exact tests determined if these items differ by sex. Results Demographic characteristics, evidence of lost skills, or ASD diagnosis did not differ significantly by sex (see Table 1). RRB total score differed by sex (p=0.022) in the IQ<70-age 6-<12 group, with females reporting lower RRB than males, but no significant sex differences were found for other groups. In the IQ>=70-age<6 group females had a higher percentage of abnormal hand/finger/other complex mannerisms (p=0.038) and abnormal intonation of vocalizations or verbalizations (p=0.049). In the IQ>=70-age 6-<12 group females also had a higher percentage of abnormal hand/finger/other complex mannerisms (p=0.037; see Table 2). No item scores differed significantly by sex in either of the IQ<70 groups. Conclusion: Findings from the largest dataset to date of matched young females and males with ASD indicate that there are sex differences in overall RRBs and in particular sub-domains for selected groups. These differences add to the growing literature regarding the need for sex-specific algorithms in autism diagnostic instruments which may then help improve our ability to identify misdiagnosed and under-diagnosed females with ASD. }, added-at = {2021-02-17T03:07:48.000+0100}, author = {Knutsen, John D and Crossman, Morgan K and Perrin, James M and Shui, Amy M and Kuhlthau, Karen A}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/26280e421afef4b3a0d8093aaeb777f9d/acn}, interhash = {33e074cee7209c87f821dee6e735bbf5}, intrahash = {6280e421afef4b3a0d8093aaeb777f9d}, keywords = {imported}, timestamp = {2021-02-17T03:08:36.000+0100}, title = {Restricted Repetitive Behaviors and Interests and the Female Autism Phenotype: An Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network (AS-ATN) Study}, year = 2017 }

Publications of peer-reviewed research in orthopaedics are not immune to such problems. The American Statistical Association (ASA) recently published an official statement on the use, misuse, and misinterpretation of statistical testing and p values in applied research. The ASA statement discussed 6 principles: (1) "P-values can indicate how incompatible the data are with a specified statistical model." (2) "P-values do not measure the probability that the studied hypothesis is true, or the probability that the data were produced by random chance alone." (3) "Scientific conclusions and business or policy decisions should not be based only on whether a p-value passes a specific threshold." (4) "Proper inference requires full reporting and transparency." (5) "A p-value, or statistical significance, does not measure the size of an effect or the importance of a result." (6) "By itself, a p-value does not provide a good measure of evidence regarding a model or hypothesis." The purpose of this article was to discuss these principles. We make several recommendations for moving forward: (1) Authors should avoid statements such as "statistically significant" or "statistically nonsignificant." (2) Investigators should report the magnitude of effect of all outcomes together with the appropriate measure of precision or variation. While many organizations have institutionalized processes for ensuring ethical compliance of such human subject experiments, these may fail to stimulate sufficient awareness for ethical issues among all project members. Some organizations even require such assessments only for medical research, leaving computer scientists without any incentive to consider and reflect on their study design and data collection practices. Faced with similar problems in the context of the EU-funded PD-Net project, we have implemented a step-by-step ethics process that aims at providing structured yet lightweight guidance to all project members both stimulating the design of ethical user studies, as well as providing continuous documentation. This paper describes our process and reports on 3 years of experience using it. @article{citeulike:10872344, abstract = {{ We have recently reported from Epilymph, a multicentre case-control study of lymphoma conducted in six European countries, a significant association between NHL and self-reported history of past or present HBV infection based on questionnaire data from face-to-face interviews. To corroborate this observation, we used the data and blood specimen from Epilymph to investigate the associations between serological indicators of HBV infection with risk of Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and specific lymphoma entities. For 1,518 cases and 1,496 controls with sufficient amount of serum or plasma, we tested HBs-antigen, anti-HBc and anti-HBs to distinguish between current or past infection and immunity by vaccination. Statistical analysis was carried out with unconditional logistic regression. We found a positive association of a past HBV infection with multiple myeloma (MM, OR = 1.97, 95 \% CL = 1.16-3.37). Non-significant associations were found between past HBV infection and B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL, OR = 1.33, 95 \% CL = 0.82-2.16) and T-cell NHL (OR = 1.59, 95 \% CL = 0.65-3.90), as well as between current HBV infection and NHL (OR = 1.49, 95 \% CL = 0.65-3.41), B-NHL (OR = 1.58, 95 \% CL = 0.69-3.64) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, OR = 1.50, 95 \% CL = 0.47-4.82). Subjects having self-reported HBV infection were serological positive in 75 \% of cases and 80 \% of controls. For vaccination, the corresponding figures were 49 and 54 \%, respectively. The present results support previous reports of an association between a history of HBV infection with an elevated lymphoma risk and add multiple myeloma to the list of potentially virus-associated lymphoma entities. }}, added-at = {2013-04-20T15:12:48.000+0200}, author = {Becker, Nikolaus and Schnitzler, Paul and Boffetta, Paolo and Brennan, Paul and Foretova, Lenka and Maynadi\'{e}, Marc and Nieters, Alexandra and Staines, Anthony and Benavente, Yolanda and Cocco, Pierluigi and de Sanjose, Silvia}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/24d0b5e504ce91cfc9a3b9fbd1a731826/astaines}, citeulike-article-id = {10872344}, citeulike-linkout-0 = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00432-012-1279-y}, citeulike-linkout-1 = {http://view.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22767316}, citeulike-linkout-2 = {http://www.hubmed.org/display.cgi?uids=22767316}, citeulike-linkout-3 = {http://www.springerlink.com/content/w8g1372457836844}, doi = {10.1007/s00432-012-1279-y}, interhash = {bd0fd8a2ecfb06d544445051371b4fe2}, intrahash = {4d0b5e504ce91cfc9a3b9fbd1a731826}, issn = {1432-1335}, journal = {Journal of cancer research and clinical oncology}, keywords = {imported}, month = dec, number = 12, pages = {1993--2001}, pmid = {22767316}, posted-at = {2013-04-20 12:48:06}, priority = {2}, publisher = {Springer Berlin / Heidelberg}, timestamp = {2013-04-20T15:12:56.000+0200}, title = {{Hepatitis B virus infection and risk of lymphoma: results of a serological analysis within the European case-control study Epilymph.}}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00432-012-1279-y}, volume = 138, year = 2012 }
@article{citeulike:10079310, abstract = {{ The study of lymphomagenesis has rarely focused on hormonal factors. Higher incidence rates are observed for many lymphoma subtypes in men compared with women suggesting an underlying association. Our goal was to investigate the association between reproductive factors and lymphomas. The Epilymph study is a multicenter case-control study carried out in six European countries from 1998 to 2004. Female cases of mature T-cell neoplasms (n = 52), Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 147), and mature B-cell neoplasms (n = 795), including its common subtypes, and their respective controls (n = 1,141) frequency matched by age, gender, and center were considered. An odds reduction of 29\% (95\% CI -46 to -6\%) was observed for mature T-cell neoplasms for each child increase among parous women and of 13\% (95\% CI -19 to -7\%) for mature B-cell neoplasms; while no association was observed for Hodgkin lymphoma. By B-cell neoplasm subtypes, these associations were found for chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (-21\%, 95\% CI -31 to -9\%) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL; -14\%; 95\% CI -23 to -3\%). Overall, no associations were observed with age at first and last pregnancy, and ever use of hormonal contraceptives and lymphoma. Higher odds ratios for a short-term use of hormonal contraceptives (<5 years), but not for a long-term use, were observed for mature B-cell neoplasms, DLBCL, and follicular lymphoma compared with never use. These data support the hypothesis that increased parity confers a protective effect against lymphoma. Less clearly, our results also indicate that hormonal contraceptives could play a role. }}, added-at = {2013-04-20T15:12:48.000+0200}, author = {Costas, Laura and Casabonne, Delphine and Benavente, Yolanda and Becker, Nikolaus and Boffetta, Paolo and Brennan, Paul and Cocco, Pierluigi and Foretova, Lenka and Maynadi\'{e}, Marc and Staines, Anthony and Kane, Eleanor and Nieters, Alexandra and de Sanjos\'{e}, Silvia}, biburl = {https://www.bibsonomy.org/bibtex/206edea32631d1a648414fbe129603a68/astaines}, citeulike-article-id = {10079310}, citeulike-linkout-0 = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10552-011-9869-6}, citeulike-linkout-1 = {http://view.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22116538}, citeulike-linkout-2 = {http://www.hubmed.org/display.cgi?uids=22116538}, citeulike-linkout-3 = {http://www.springerlink.com/content/52171433j72771n8}, day = 25, doi = {10.1007/s10552-011-9869-6}, interhash = {b09a11221ba2bf6c265c3c788ad7372a}, intrahash = {06edea32631d1a648414fbe129603a68}, issn = {1573-7225}, journal = {Cancer causes \& control : CCC}, keywords = {imported}, month = jan, number = 1, pages = {195--206}, pmid = {22116538}, posted-at = {2013-04-20 12:49:49}, priority = {2}, publisher = {Springer Netherlands}, timestamp = {2013-04-20T15:12:56.000+0200}, title = {{Reproductive factors and lymphoid neoplasms in Europe: findings from the EpiLymph case-control study.}}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10552-011-9869-6}, volume = 23, year = 2012 }

Advances in the field of fluorescent labelling (e.g., fluorescent proteins, quantum dots, tetracystein domains) and optics (e.g., super-resolution techniques and quantitative methods) not only provide better images of the cytoskeleton, but also offer an opportunity to quantify the complex of molecular events that populate this highly organised, yet dynamic, structure.For instance, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy and Forster resonance energy transfer imaging allow mapping of protein-protein interactions; furthermore, techniques based on the measurement of photobleaching kinetics (e.g., fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, fluorescence loss in photobleaching, and fluorescence localisation after photobleaching) permit the characterisation of axonal transport and, more generally, diffusion of relevant biomolecules.Quantitative fluorescence microscopy techniques offer powerful tools for understanding the physiological and pathological roles of molecular machineries in the living cell.}, added-at = {2010-12-14T18:12:02.000+0100}, author = {Esposito, A. and Schlachter, S. and Schierle, G. @book{ ito-hanging, abstract = { Conventional wisdom about young people's use of digital technology often equates generational identity with technology identity: today's teens seem constantly plugged in to video games, social networks sites, and text messaging. Yet there is little actual research that investigates the intricate dynamics of youth's social and recreational use of digital media. Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out fills this gap, reporting on an ambitious three-year ethnographic investigation into how young people are living and learning with new media in varied settings—at home, in after school programs, and in online spaces. By focusing on media practices in the everyday contexts of family and peer interaction, the book views the relationship of youth and new media not simply in terms of technology trends but situated within the broader structural conditions of childhood and the negotiations with adults that frame the experience of youth in the United States. Integrating twenty-three different case studies—which include Harry Potter podcasting, video-game playing, music-sharing, and online romantic breakups—in a unique collaborative authorship style, Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out is distinctive for its combination of in-depth description of specific group dynamics with conceptual analysis.}, added-at = {2009-11-19T01:45:47.000+0100}, address = {Cambridge, MA}, author = {Ito, Mizuko and Baumer, Sonja and Bittanti, Matteo and danah boyd and Cody, Rachel and Herr-Stephenson, Becky and Horst, Heather A. and Lange, Patricia G. and Mahendran, Dilan and Martinez, Katynka Z. and Pascoe, C. We have sequenced the [{\textasciitilde}]90 megabase {(Mb)} genome of the human filarial parasite Brugia malayi and predict [{\textasciitilde}]11,500 protein coding genes in 71 Mb of robustly assembled sequence. Comparative analysis with the free-living, model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans revealed that, despite these genes having maintained little conservation of local synteny during [{\textasciitilde}]350 million years of evolution, they largely remain in linkage on chromosomal units. More than 100 conserved operons were identified. In LFN-exposed individuals, microscopy studies of their pericardia disclosed the existence of a 5-layered organ, up to 2.33 mm thick. The biomechanical properties which allow this abnormally large organ to coexist with a normal heart function (no diastolic dysfunction is exhibited by these patients) are discussed. The relative positioning of collagen and elastin fibers allow for an unusual reorganization of the extra layers of tissue so that the constant heart expansions and contractions are in no way impeded. The challenges of developing a biotensegrity-based mathematical model describing this new organ is still an open issue.}, added-at = {2012-01-27T14:10:42.000+0100}, author = {Alves-Pereira, Mariana and de Melo, João Joanaz and Branco, Nuno A.A. Pronounced terrestrial summer warming in. arctic Alaska correlates with a lengthening of the snow-free season that has increased atmospheric heating locally by about 3 watts per square meter per decade (similar in magnitude to the regional heating expected over multiple decades from a doubling of atmospheric CO2). Efforts are under way to close the remaining gaps; however, the sequence is of sufficient accuracy and contiguity to be declared substantially complete and to support an initial analysis of genome structure and preliminary gene annotation and interpretation.
